Swindon Robins have confirmed Ronnie Russell as their new team manager, replacing Alun Rossiter who left the club last month.

The 61-year-old is brother of Robins co-owner Terry Russell and he spent last year working as the track curator at Blunsden.

"I am absolutely delighted to have been chosen for the role of Swindon team manager," Russell told BBC Wiltshire.

"For me, the opportunity to manage the side is a real privilege."

Since starting in speedway in 1963, Russell has worked for a variety of clubs including Crayford Kestrels and Arena-Essex, where he linked up with current Robins skipper Leigh Adams.

The Swindon team is almost complete with just the number eight rider to be confirmed, and Russell is feeling positive about their chances in 2010.

"The team has so much potential and I believe all the riders have the ability to increase their starting average," said Russell.

"I want to achieve as much as possible. I will be giving 100% commitment to this job."

Robins co-owner Terry Russell said: "This is a really positive move for Swindon Speedway and one I'm sure our fans will react warmly to."

Despite the family connection, Russell says the job was not handed to him on a plate.

"I had to apply just like anyone else. I was a bit shocked at first because I thought I would naturally be given the post," he added.

"But I was soon made aware that I would have to go through the normal procedure, and the right person would get the job."
