William Dunlop also won the 125 race at the North West 200 in May |
North West 200 organisers have decided not to hold a 250cc race at the meeting next year. Race director Mervyn Whyte explained that the lack of 250 races in other top meetings meant fewer two-stroke bikes were being produced. This has resulted in fewer teams and competitors entering the 250 race at the North West 200. There will be six races in the 2010 meeting - two Superbike, two Supersport, 125 and Superstock. Meanwhile, there is a proposal to bring in a daytime practice session for the first time next year. The Thursday session, traditionally held in the evening, would run from 0930 to 1530 to allow for additional qualifying time. The axing of the 250 class is a blow to Ballymoney rider William Dunlop, who won the race in May. "I'm really disappointed about it - it has been on the cards for a while and at least there is still the 125 race," Dunlop told the News Letter. "It's a real pity but I suppose it will mean that I'll go into the history books as the last winner of the 250cc race at the North West."
