Toomebridge rider Eugene Laverty wins the final World Supersport race in Portugal but has to be satisfied with runners-up spot in the Championship.

Eugene Laverty won the final World Supersport race in Portugal on Sunday but the Toomebridge rider had to settle for second place in the championship.

Cal Crutchlow was fourth at Portaimao - enough to give him the title with a seven-point gap to Laverty.

"It was a tough race but also the perfect race, leading from start to finish," said Laverty.

Ballyclare's Jonathan Rea was second and third in the World Superbike races and ended fifth in the standings.

Ben Spies came home ahead of Rea in the opener with Max Biaggi in third.

Michel Fabrizio won the second race from Noriyuki Haga and Rea with Spies coming fourth and securing the title in his rookie season.
