Adam Shields led from the front at Coventry |
Lakeside Hammers won their first piece of silverware at Elite League level after a 108-77 aggregate victory over Coventry in the KO Cup on Friday. The Purfleet-based outfit led by 23 points from the first leg and secured a 49-41 win in the Midlands. Number one rider Adam Shields led from the front at Coventry as he top scored with 16 points, with Kauko Niemenen chipping in with 11. It rounds-off a successful season for Lakeside who also made the play-offs. BBC Essex speedway correspondent Terry Catley said: "It was a good night for the Hammers fans as they watched their team pick-up a well deserved first piece of silverware at senior level. "They deserved to take the Cup and showed their intent by not just settling for defending the lead they had built-up in the first leg. "They engaged the Bees with some forceful riding and it is a reward for promoter Stuart Douglas and team manager Jon Cook for the way they have turned the club's fortunes around."
