Hammers boss eyes maiden trophy

Lakeside Hammers
The Hammers have made it through to their third final in two seasons

Lakeside Hammers co-promoter Jon Cook says it is time for them to turn their promise into actual silverware.

The Essex side reached the final of the Knock-Out Cup with a 95-85 aggregate victory over Swindon Robins last week.

Having reached the finals of both the Elite League play-offs and the Craven Shield last season, Cook told BBC Essex they now had to take the next step.

"We've had two finals now - this is the third one and this is the one that we need to win," he said.

"It would be absolutely fantastic to bring some silverware to the club in such a short space of time and that's what all our efforts will be thrown into come September in the cup final."

So far this season, the Hammers have not been as close to their 2008 season form, which saw them miss out on the Elite League title to Poole in the play-off final.

But Cook hopes the Craven Shield achievement will provide a boost for the remainder of the 2009 campaign.

"I'm not sure the seven are quite as good as last year's, but we show a lot of character and a lot of heart and it's a very happy team," he explained.

"If we can all find form and keep the squad together in the second half of the season, I think we'll be there or thereabouts for a shout of the play-offs as well."

The Hammers currently sit sixth in the Elite League table.
