Eugene Laverty is now second in the World Supersport Championship |
Eugene Laverty secured his third World Supersport win of the season at Kyalami in South Africa on Sunday. The Toomebridge rider came home 2.5 seconds ahead of Cal Crutchlow who now leads Laverty by 13 points in the championship standings. Ballyclare's Jonathan Rea was fourth in the first World Superbike race of the day and went one better in race two by claiming a third place podium finish. The two results move Rea up to fifth in the world standings on 106 points. Michael Laverty finished 11th in the World Supersport race as he sat in for the injured Robbin Harms. Noriyuki Haga won both World Superbike races, with Michel Fabrizio second in both events. "That win may have looked easy but it wasn't," said Eugene, after the race. "It was tough to control the race for so long with only a few seconds' lead but it was a great feeling to be out at the front." Rea said he had hoped his first top-three finish might have come earlier in the season. "You could say the season started three rounds before we did but the development is going really well now and I'd like to thank the whole team for working so hard to move things in the right direction," he said.
