O'Sullivan dedicates win to father

BBC Sport Online's Peter Sanderson at The Crucible

Ronnie O'Sullivan dedicated his greatest ever win to his father after clinching the Embassy World Championship final with an 18-14 victory over John Higgins.

The 25-year-old suggested he was happier for his father, who is nearly nine years into a life sentence for murder on the Isle of Sheppey, than for himself.

Ronnie senior was found guilty the day after his son qualified for the 1992 UK Championships.

"It will probably mean more to my dad than it does to me," he told BBC Sport Online.

"He won't show it but I know exactly how he will be feeling - I can't describe just how good the feeling is but it makes all the tough days seem a million miles away.

"We have been through some hard times but this makes it all worth it.

"It is a special moment for me and the whole family. They know how much it means to me because snooker is in my blood.

"They see the pain that I go through and they are a tremendous help - I'd like to think this win repays them."

'Bottle'

O'Sullivan, normally a cool customer under pressure, added that he was very close to cracking under the strain in the final few frames.

And he heaped praise on Higgins, claiming he was probably a better all-round player than himself.

"I had to play well to beat John. All through the tournament he has scored heavily and it took a huge effort to beat him," said O'Sullivan, who is now ranked second in the world.

You can guarantee I will be the happiest man in Sheffield tonight
Ronnie O'Sullivan
"He possesses everything a snooker player needs to be good - he's got bottle, temperament and as a person he is the nicest in the game which is what made it so hard to beat him.

"I am so happy to have won this event.

"Admittedly, the Jimmy White curse was weighing on my mind. You think about what happened to him and you wonder how he ever went back into that arena after losing the final six times.

"I was really feeling it from a mental point of view. I have never felt anything like it but you can guarantee I will be the happiest man in Sheffield tonight."
