| Hankey counts out Fordham Hankey's performance could not be sniffed at Ted Hankey 5-2 Andy Fordham Ted "The Count" Hankey took a major step towards retaining his Embassy crown as he saw off Andy "The Viking" Fordham with a workmanlike performance. Hankey rarely looked in trouble as he won his semi-final clash 5-2 against Fordham, who lost at the semi-final stage for the fourth time. Pub landlord Fordham briefly threatened as he pulled back to 2-3 with an 11- dart finish. But Hankey took six of the next seven legs and closed out on 144 for victory.
Defending champion Hankey said he was delighted to get the chance to retain his crown after the win. "I really want to get this title again and emulate the likes of Eric Bristow and Ray Barneveld - although I'm already a legend! "Last year I won 6-0 in the final but I don't think John Walton will let me get away with that, but 6-1 or 6-2 will do! "I noticed he tired a bit in his semi so I'm hoping he does again. "It will mean everything to me to win again because I don't just want one or two Embassy titles, I want four or five."
London publican Fordham, the world number three, said he always felt under pressure from Hankey. "I felt I played okay, but Ted put me under pressure from the off and I never really got back into it. "Ted played very well and although i didn't play badly it's very hard to stay in it when he's averaging over 33 for a dart," he told BBC Sport Online. "As for the final, Ted's been there before but John Boy is playing so well it could go either way." Mardle also tipped Hankey to come out on top and said: "I think Ted's playing the best darts and will win 6-2." |
