The Embassy world darts championship is renowned as one of the best sporting contests of the year.

The drama that has been witnessed at the Lakeside has given many darts fans reason to believe, that despite its critics, darts is a sport that can compete with any in terms of tension and thrilling climaxes.

Last year, Ted Hankey's 6-0 whitewash of Ronnie Baxter was marked by a stunning check-out to take the first title of the millennium.

    1999 final - Ray Barneveld v Ronnie Baxter

    Ray Barneweld the only overseas player to win back to back embassy titles

    In what many consider to be the best championships ever, Ray Barneweld shows his true class by becoming the first person since Eric Bristow to win back to back titles.

    Ronnie Baxter puts up a valiant effort, losing 6-5, but suffers from the Dutchman's superior finishing.

    1998 final - Ray Barneweld v Ritchie Burnett

    Ritchie Burnett winner in 1995

    A re-match of the 1995 final, 'Barney' takes his revenge to claim his first title.

    The former postman is overcome with joy as Welshman Ritchie Burnett takes him all the way to an eleventh set tiebreak.

    Barneweld takes the last set by four legs to two to confirm his number one seeding.

    1990 second round Paul Lim v Jack McKenna

    Paul Lim

    The American Paul Lim sends the crowd wild as he completes a rare nine dart finish, the equivalent of a 147 in snooker.

    Lim collected �52,000 for the perfect leg against the Republic of Ireland's Jack McKenna.

    1983 final Eric Bristow v Keith Deller

    Eric Bristow five times winner of the Embassy world darts championship

    Bristow hands the title to a youthful Keith Deller as the Crafty Cockney decides to play safe in what turns out to be his last throw of the darts.

    Needing 121 to stay in the match, Bristow elects to avoid the bull believing he'll get another go and leaves Deller with a 138 finish.
