| Young Amy takes prize Alex, Lee and Amy appeared on Friday's Blue Peter Sprinter Amy Spencer has won the first BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award. Amy, wheelchair athlete Lee Lower and hockey player Alex Danson, all aged 16, were all on a shortlist, announced on the Blue Peter TV programme. The award was presented by England footballer Michael Owen. Amy is world under-18 silver medallist in the 100m and 200m, despite still having two years left in the age group. Her hero is one of the all-time athletics greats, and although she would like to emulate his achievements she's keeping her feet firmly on the ground. "My sporting hero is Jesse Owens," said Amy. "I really admire him for going to Germany and competing at the Olympics when Hitler was in charge and overcoming all that adversity." Lower is a star in the field events and is national age-group champion in the shot, javelin and discus. Respect He respects the achievements of leading British paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson. "Tanni Grey is a real inspiration. She's done everything really, and I'd really like to follow her." Lower's talent was spotted by a teacher when he was 12 and he can now throw the discus 19m, the shot eight metres and the javelin 25m. "At my last school my PE teacher entered me in a competition and I came him with four gold medals from the four events I entered," he said. "I thought I'd take it on from there and see how it went." The final contender is England under-21 hockey international Danson, who started playing hockey with her mum before she went to school. She now plays adult hockey for Southampton-based club Trojans. "It's really challenging but very enjoyable," she said. "I play as a centre forward or on the left, but I'm not sure if my finishing is as good as Michael Owen's yet." "Jane Sixsmith is great, but my hero outside hockey is Sir Steven Redgrave because of all the training he did, and he got the golds at the end of it. "I think that's fantastic." |
