| |  Sunday, 9 December, 2001, 22:22 GMT Fergie handed new accolade Ferguson won the European Cup in 1999 Sir Alex Ferguson added yet another trophy to his collection at the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year show on Sunday. The Manchester United manager received the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award. Ferguson, who is due to retire at the end of the season, has won seven league titles since succeeding Ron Atkinson at Old Trafford in 1986. "This award is truly appreciated," he said. "I've had the great privilege of managing some of the finest players in the world."
But the highlight of his career came two years ago when United claimed an unprecedented treble of Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup. In 1995, he was awarded the CBE in the New Years honours list and in 1999 became the first working football manager to the knighted. He also tasted success early in his career, guiding Aberdeen to three Scottish Championships and the Cup Winners Cup in 1983. As well as attending on the night, Ferguson also discussed his passion for horse racing with Clare Balding. The Scotsman owns a number of horses and enjoyed plenty of success this year, most notably with the exciting Rock of Gibraltar, which runs in the red and white colours of United.
BBC Director of Sport, Peter Salmon, said: "Sir Alex Ferguson has had an outstanding career in both football and racing, which is not over yet. "He may be retiring from Man Utd at the end of the season but his influence will no doubt be seen on the pitch and the race course for several years to come. "This is our first Lifetime Achievement Award and I can think of no better recipient than the most successful and charismatic football manager in recent times. "His passion authority and success rate set him above others in his business". | |
