Cooper was himself twice a winner of the trophy.  26 year-old ice skater John Curry receives the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award for 1976 from Lord Mountbatten.  Virginia Wade receives the Sports Personality of the Year award for 1977 from Prince Michael of Kent.  Steve Ovett receives the award in 1978 from Prince Charles - 15 athletes have won the trophy, more than any other sport.  Seb Coe after receiving the BBC Sports Pesonality of the Year Award for 1979 - the year after his great rival Ovett. | |
