| Gary Lineker Former England captain Gary Lineker took over from Des Lynam as the presenter of Match of the Day last season. He also made his debut on Sports Personality of the Year and will again help present it this year. After a sparkling career on the pitch that took in spells with Leicester City, Everton, Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and Nagoya Grampus Eight as well as winning the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup, Gary began his broadcasting career in earnest with Radio 5 in 1992. He took over as the host of Sunday Sport on the re-launched Radio 5 Live in 1995 after ending his playing career in Japan. He joined BBC Sport's TV team in 1995, appearing on Sportsnight, Football Focus and Match of the Day, having gained a taster for it following England's elimination in the 1986 World Cup. After working as a roving reporter at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and becoming the regular presenter of Football Focus, Lineker stepped into the Match of the Day hot seat at the start of last season. |
