| England hold on for draw Hussain falls victim to another contentious decision Pakistan 316 & 269-3 (dec) England 342 and 125-5 Match drawn Click here for scorecard The second Test between England and Pakistan ended in a predictable draw in Faisalabad but only after an intriguing final day's play. In truth, a lifeless pitch - castigated by both sides - was the only winner, as Michael Atherton steered the tourists to safety with a typically tenacious 65 not out in the face of Pakistan's all-out spin attack. England, chasing 244 for an always-improbable victory, looked briefly in trouble at 57 for three and 110 for five. But Atherton batted for over three hours and hit five boundaries as his calming influence prevented England suffering a decisive slump. However, there was still some relief in the England ranks when Pakistan captain Moin Khan decided to come off early with England at 125 for five. Craig White remained unbeaten alongside Atherton on nine.
Pakistan had sensed victory as England collapsed to 57 for three from 44 without loss with Arshad Khan claiming two wickets in nine balls. Hussain was harshly adjudged to have been caught behind by Moin Khan off Arshad for five with television replays showing that the ball had brushed the pad, and not the bat. Graham Thorpe was then bamboozled by Arshad's spin and clean bowled for a duck. Saqlain Mushtaq had made the breakthrough when he brilliantly bowled Marcus Trescothick for 10. Declaration Earlier, the home side, aided by man of the match Razzaq's impressive century, had declared at 269 for three. Razzaq's century, which included 12 fours, came off 225 balls in 331 minutes. Razzaq, who turned 21 on Saturday, achieved the landmark when he scurried for two runs after turning a Darren Gough delivery to mid wicket. Pakistan immediately declared, leaving England to bat out the day.
Inzaman, who had hit a six of Salisbury a few balls before, was caught out by Hick seeking a repeat. However, Inzaman and Razzaq, who shared a 148-run partnership, had piled on the pressure for Pakistan to leave a draw the extent of England's ambitions. Razzaq earned the man of the match award thanks to his ton and his three-wicket haul in the first innings. The series is now perfectly poised for the final Test, which begins in Karachi on Thursday morning. |
