Pakistan regained the initiative on the fourth day against England in Faisalabad, thanks to two impressive half-centuries from Salim Elahi and Abdur Razzaq.

With the wicket continuing to frustrate the bowlers, Elahi and Razzaq effectively dashed England's hopes of winning the second Test to push Pakistan to 186-2 at close of play, 160 runs ahead.

After Darren Gough had struck an early blow for the tourists by dismissing free-flowing opener Shahid Afridi with just 13 runs on the board, England struggled to achieve any notable swing or spin.

Elahi was quick to take advantage, notching up a dominant 72, before being tempted into a foolish sweep off Ashley Giles.

Any thoughts England might have had of disrupting Pakistan soon disappeared, however, with Inzamam-ul-Haq looking typically accomplished.

But it was Razzaq who continued where Elahi had left off, sweeping and driving past the tired England fielders to end the day with an impressive and well-earned 60.

Late stand

Earlier, Gough and Craig White combined to good effect with the bat for a tenth-wicket stand of 47 that took England's first innings total to 342.

White, particularly, played well, pulling and cutting his way to a fine 41.

He also cleared the boundary twice, with an impressive hooked six and a superbly clean strike straight down the ground.

White lost overnight partner Andrew Caddick early in the session, who provided Abdur with his third wicket of the innings when he was given out caught behind for five.

The pair had added only 13 to England's close-of-play score when Caddick's thin edge was pouched by Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper Moin Khan.

But last man Gough came in, and a couple of composed flicks off his pads helped his Yorkshire colleague take the tourists into first innings credit.

However, the pair's valiant partnership was finally broken by Saqlain Mushtaq, who persuaded a ball to viciously spin, bounce and clip White's leg stump.
