| Honours even in Lahore draw Hussain leaves the field with physio Dean Conway Pakistan v England - Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore First Test, fifth day. Click here to launch scorecard. England were given a rough time by the Pakistani bowlers in their second innings as the Lahore Test ended in a draw. The tourists declared on 77 for four and also suffered an injury scare to skipper Nasser Hussain as Wasim Akram produced a fiery opening spell and then spinners Saqlain Mushtaq and Mushtaq Ahmed bowled impressively. Hussain though was relieved to suffer only bruising after being struck on his right wrist. Attempting to pull a short delivery from Akram, Hussain turned away in pain having been struck, while the ball proceeded to bounce off the stumps without dislodging the bails. England physio Dean Conway treated Hussain at the wicket before leading him off the pitch but precautionary x-rays revealed that the Essex man had not suffered a break. And England are hopeful it is not an injury that will sideline him ahead of the second Test in ten days time. Dean Conway said: "We will need to continue to assess the situation, but we are optimistic Nasser will be fit for the next Test."
Graham Thorpe became man of the match Saqlain Mushtaq's ninth victim of the Test when he was caught by Abdur Razzaq and Michael Atherton then fell lbw to Mushtaq Ahmed as England slipped to 39 for three. When Graeme Hick was bowled by Shahid Afridi for 14, England declared to bring proceedings to an end. England had finally polished off the Pakistan tail shortly after lunch as Ashley Giles and Craig White finished with four wickets apiece. The home side ended on 401 all out in their first innings, handing England a first innings advantage of 79. Youhana's ton Yousuf Youhana's marathon innings came to an end when he got an outside edge to a delivery from the Warwickshire slow left-armer and Alec Stewart did the rest behind the stumps. The Pakistani number five fell for a Test best 124, made from 308 balls, having added 127 for the ninth wicket with Saqlain. Last man Mushtaq Ahmed was unable to offer the same sort of resistance, falling lbw to White without scoring. Saqlain remained unbeaten on 32. White finished with four for 54, while Giles took four for 113 from a mammoth 59 overs. |
