| Honours even in foursomes ![]() Langer and Montgomerie kept their unbeaten record Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer won the final match of Saturday morning to level the foursomes. As a result, Europe went into the afternoon fourballs with a one-point lead - 6-5. However, the Americans threatened to steal that lead after winning the first two matches of the day, including a first Belfry point for Tiger Woods. The world number one combined with Davis Love III for a comfortable win, adding to David Toms and Phil Mickelson's earlier victory. Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood maintained their 100% record before Europe's veterans closed out another tense match on the 18th.
Fulke/Price v Mickelson/Toms (USA win 2&1) Phil Mickelson and David Toms maintained their unbeaten run with a comfortable victory over Europe's rookie pairing. Pierre Fulke and Phillip Price held a surprise one-hole lead at the 10th and the Swede had a putt to double that advantage on 12 that lipped out. Then the Americans struck, winning at 13, 14 and 15 to turn the match around before earning an improbable half at 16 courtesy of a wonderful Mickelson bunker recovery. They had two putts for victory on the 17th and duly wrapped up their second win of the Ryder Cup. Garcia/Westwood v Cink/Furyk (Europe win 2&1) Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia maintained their 100% record with victory in the second match. However, at times they had to pull out some remarkable recoveries and scrambling saves to secure the win. And in Jim Furyk and Stewart Cink they were playing one of the form partnerships from Friday's afternoon action. But the European pair held on throughout, worked hard and only lost one hole, the ninth. Montgomerie/Langer v Verplank/Hoch (Europe win 1 up) Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer were taken to the 18th for the second successive foursomes match but held their nerve. The pair had seen Scott Hoch and Scott Verplank eat into their two-hole lead over the opening stages of the back nine and by 15 the match was level. But Montgomerie sunk a crucial putt on 17 to go dormie one up, and when Hoch missed with a chip on 18 the point was secured. Langer's appearance and win set two Ryder Cup foursomes records - his 11th victory coming in his 18th outing. Bjorn/Clarke v Woods/Love III (USA win 4&3) Tiger Woods broke his Belfry duck with victory in the bottom match. The world number one and Davis Love III recovered from a terrible start for a comfortable win. They made immediate amends, winning the second, adding further holes at four, six, 11 and 15. Thomas Bjorn and Darren Clarke were both out of sorts. |
