Montgomerie/Langer v Verplank/Hoch

Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer produced a late rally to grab a valuable point for Europe in Saturday's foursomes.

The experienced duo edged their fiercely dogged opponents Scott Verplank and Scott Hoch on the final two greens to win by a hole.

It was a special moment for Langer whose 18th appearance in the foursomes equalled Nick Faldo's record.

But more significantly, it was the 45-year-old's 11th win in the event, smashing another record set by his former European team-mate.

Montgomerie and Langer's successful pairing has reaped 2� for Europe and the German was quick to pay tribute to his Scottish partner.

"We played three rounds together and we were never behind, we were always up or level," Langer said afterwards. "It's been a wonderful partnership with Colin."

Europe's veteran pair returned to the fray on Saturday morning determined to maintain the steady form that has epitomised their Ryder Cup so far.

And the encounter with Hoch, who they successfully saw off in the fourballs on Friday, and wild card Verplank, was an entertaining affair.

Langer was forced to pull off a sensational 15-foot putt just to halve the opening hole.

The experienced duo edged ahead on the fourth, capitalising on a surprise mistake by the youngest player in the group, Verplank.

The 32-year-old missed an easy eight-foot putt to enable the Europeans to win the 442-yard hole with par.

Having maintained their one-hole lead at the turn, Montgomerie then doubled it on the par-four 10th with a birdie putt.

But the American pair finally won a hole at the 11th courtesy of Verplank's birdie putt.

Putting nightmares ensued, keeping the contest desperately close with both Langer and Verplank missing hole-winning efforts on the back nine.

Hoch finally brought the Americans back to all square, sealing a birdie at the long 15th.

It had been a valiant effort by Montgomerie, whose delicate chip from the edge of the green only narrowly missed the cup, forcing the Europeans to settle for par.

On the penultimate hole, the Europeans once again edged ahead after a fantastic approach shot by Langer set up his team-mate, who obliged with a birdie putt from six feet out.

When it was clear the Americans would only be able to halve the final hole, the game was effectively over and Europe had snatched a vital point.
