Tiger Woods notched up his first win of this year's Ryder Cup as he and Davis Love III eased past Darren Clarke and Thomas Bjorn.

Bjorn and Clarke, paired for the third consecutive contest, were let down by some distinctly average putting while their opponents rarely slipped up.

The European stalwarts only once held the lead throughout the morning foursomes after Love found the bunker with his first shot of the round.

The Americans conceded the hole when they finally made it to the green.

But the early nerves dissipated on the very next hole when Love made amends at the second, landing his shot to within five feet of the target. Woods duly made the putt.

The world number one and his partner moved themselves into the lead after a missed Bjorn putt on the fourth, a lead that was stretched to two holes on the sixth, as the Dane missed his third consecutive putt.

Europe had their chances to cut the deficit, Clarke with a monstrous putt on the par-three seventh which went just wide.

Woods nearly pushed himself and Love three holes clear on the eighth but the ball refused to drop and remained at the lip of the hole.

They eventually stretched out that advantage on the 11th as Clarke missed an opportunity to halve the hole.

And, as the putts refused to drop for the home side, Woods and Love were rarely troubled again.

Woods eventually rounded off the tie with a putt on the 15th.
