Rory McIlroy carded six birdies in Chicago on Sunday

Rory McIlroy fired a two-under-par 69 in the final round of the BMW Championship to end on three under.

The 21-year-old from Holywood birdied the third and fifth holes and after a bogey at six he picked up shots at the ninth and 10th in Chicago.

Bogeys at 12,13 and 14 halted his charge but he carded birdies at 15 and 17 to ensure a sub-70 round.

McIlroy ended in a tie for 37th place, outside the top-27 place he needed to make the Tour Championship Final.

Dustin Johnson won the event on nine under, one ahead of runner-up, England's Paul Casey.
