Rory McIlroy will play in the Ryder Cup next month |
Rory McIlroy fired a third-round 69 at the Deutsche Bank Championship in the United States but remained well off the pace in Boston. McIlroy's second-round 76 effectively ended his hopes of contending and he is now 13 shots behind leader Jason Day who is on 17 under par. The 21-year-old, who had fired an opening 64, carded four birdies and two bogeys in his third round. The tournament has a Monday finish because of the US Labor Day holiday. Padraig Harrington missed the cut by one shot on Saturday evening despite a second-round 68. Harrington was a controversial pick for the European Ryder Cup team last weekend. Paul Casey, omitted from the Europe team by skipper Colin Montgomerie, was level with McIlroy on four under after a third-round 71.
