Ganton Golf Club is hosting the British Ladies Open Amateur Championship for the fourth time from 23 June.

One hundred and forty four golfers from Britain and Europe qualified for the stroke-play section, and the top 64 will compete in the matchplay stages.

"It's a very prestigious event for us to have," Ganton secretary Paul Ware told BBC Radio York.

"It's free entry and you'll see some of the best amateur golfers in the world playing this week here."

The sun shone on the opening day of strokeplay and Ware added: "We've been praying for a week like this and we've been blessed with perfect weather for golf.

"Ganton's been hosting these sort of events for many, many years now and long may it continue.

"It is a very significant event in the calendar and the winner of this event gets the chance to go through to the Women's British Open Championship, to play against some of the world's leading professional golfers."

Local hopes rest on Ganton member Sara Garbutt, the current Yorkshire Ladies Championship, and Emma Brown, the experienced Malton-and-Norton member and Curtis Cup star.
