York City Rowing Club won the women's novices doubles

Large crowds gathered in the sun to watch York City Rowing Club's Summer Regatta along the River Ouse between Clifton and Lendal Bridge.

Club captain Nick Price told BBC Radio York: "We had 210 entries, quite a big entry, so we've had about 160 races.

"Crews have come from Durham, Newark, Peterborough and London.

"People train throughout the winter and the summer in order to win, but, ultimately, it's the taking part, and there's a social side to it as well."

He added: "We stage these events and try to attract as many people as possible.

"They (the competitors) pay to take part because it takes a lot or organisation and a lot of expense, and that helps to fund the facilities we have here."

Overall, Price considered the regatta to have been one of the most successful staged by the club.

"All the food's gone, the bar's busy, people are smiling, people are still sitting outside in the warm weather, so I think that's a pretty good sign," he concluded.
