Brewerton excelled with Nocera, but crashed to singles defeat

Wales' Becky Brewerton suffered a heavy final-day singles defeat as the USA beat Europe to retain the Solheim Cup.

The 26-year-old wildcard selection was second out against Angela Stanford with the teams level on eight points.

But she crashed to a 5&4 defeat at Sugar Grove, Illinois, to undo her earlier good work in the team events.

Brewerton and Laura Davies lost the fourballs on Friday (5&4) but Brewerton and Gwladys Nocera gained foursome wins on Friday (3&1) and Saturday (5&4).

After Stanford won her team's first point of the day on Sunday, the US secured the decisive 14th point when Morgan Pressel beat Swede Anna Nordqvist 3&2.

They went on to complete a 16-12 victory, their third successive triumph in the biennial matchplay contest.

The USA have won the trophy eight times to Europe's three, and they have never been defeated on American soil.

Brewerton, from Abergele, was playing her second Solheim Cup after debuting at Halmstad in 2007, winning one match, halving another and losing a third.
