O'Neill studies his approach on the last |
Royal Jersey Golf Club's Gavin O'Neill won the 2009 HSBC Private Bank Jersey Amateur Golf Championship at his home club on Sunday. The 2005 champion defeated Christy McLaughlin on the 18th by two holes. Going into the last with a one-hole lead, O'Neill hit a perfect approach to three feet from the cup ensuring glory. He told BBC Jersey: "All the boys that are going to Aland [the Island Games] are all playing well so hopefully if we play well we can bring back a gold." Jersey Golf Union secretary Martin Viney is pleased with the amount of spectators who turned out for this year's championship. | We haven't seen crowds like this following the golf for a good few years Jersey Golf Union secretary Martin Viney |
With at least 100 spectators following the final between the eventual winner and Christy McClaughlin, Viney said he could not have asked for a better weekend to highlight golf in Jersey. "It's been a great final and a great weekend; we're delighted with the outcome and the crowds that have come along, it's been tremendous," he said. "We haven't seen crowds like this following the golf for a good few years." O'Neill will now take on Guernsey champion Andy Eggo on 14 June at the Royal Jersey Golf Club for the Inter Island Championship.
