August date for the English Open

English Open

Organisers of the English Open at St Mellion have announced the event will take place from 13-16 August next year.

It is the first European Tour event at the Cornish course since the Benson and Hedges International in 1995.

It will also be the first staging of the English Open for seven years, with St Mellion agreeing a deal to keep the event until at least 2013.

"It's an ideal opportunity for St Mellion," said Stephen Lewis of the course's owners, Crown Golf.

St Mellion is currently undergoing a 100m upgrade with the addition of a hotel and improvements to the Jack Nicklaus-designed course that will be used for the event.

"I think it's the icing on the cake - when you're investing that sort of money it's important to establish the event in the greater market that's out there," Lewis added.

The event will need 380 volunteers to help it run smoothly, doing jobs such as scoring and marshalling.

"We've got a great rapport with the local golf clubs and we're going to ask their members to help," said David Moon, golf operations manager at St Mellion.

"I think it's not just good for Cornwall, but the whole of the South West. What we're trying to do is encourage the local golfer to come down to St Mellion to spectate," he added.

The organisers expect around 40,000 spectators at the event, which takes place over the same weekend as the British Fireworks Championships in nearby Plymouth.
