The planned new resort has been given the go-ahead. |
The return of European Tour golf to Cornwall has moved a step closer after plans for a 100m redevelopment of the St Mellion International were approved. Caradon Council has given the go-ahead for the scheme, despite objections from people living in the area.
St Mellion hopes to attract the English Open after only hosting seniors events since last holding the Benson and Hedges International Open in 1995.
The plans include a new 80 bedroom hotel and upgraded golf courses.
There will also be an improved clubhouse and 265 golf homes at the resort, which hosted the Benson and Hedges International Open for six years from 1990.
The resort will give 220,000 to projects to improve the roads around the site and 200,000 to local employment initiatives over the next five years.

"We look forward to helping them deliver those local measures so that we can all move forward and put St Mellion back on the map," said Matthew Lynwood of Crown Golf, which owns the St Mellion International.
Outline permission for the development was agreed before Christmas on condition that the scheme protected local wildlife, had a travel plan and made financial contributions to community projects.
