Phil Mickelson held his nerve over a tense back nine to win the Deutsche Bank Championship by two shots and claim his 32nd PGA Tour title.

Mickelson hit a fine 66 to end on 16 under and keep his playing partner Tiger Woods at arm's length despite the world number one's late run of birdies.

Overnight leader Brett Wetterich failed to get his round going, and had to settle for a share of second place.

Wetterich finished on 14 under alongside Woods and Arron Oberholser.

Woods birdied three of the last five holes to put the pressure on Mickelson, but the 37-year-old refused to buckle.

Mickelson carded a double bogey at the 12th but birdies at the 16th and 18th ensured he kept his nose in front.

"This was a really fun day - I'm looking forward to having some more days like this," said Mickelson, who started the final day five shots off Wetterich's lead.

"For 10 years I've struggled against Tiger. This sure feels great to go head-to-head... and over the last five or six holes when he's making a run, it was fun to match him with birdies."

His win takes him above Jim Furyk to second in the world rankings, and lifts him to the top of the FedEx Cup standings.

Last week's Barclays Classic - the first event of the FedEx Cup - featured 144 players, which was whittled down to 120 for the Deutsche Bank event.

Now the top 70 players in the standings will advance to the BMW Championship in Chicago, with the top 30 progressing to the Tour Championship in Atlanta, between 13-16 September.

But the winner of the FedEx Cup, and a $10m bonus, will be the player with the most points at the end of the series, putting the emphasis on overall results.
