Brewerton delight at Solheim spot
Becky Brewerton
Becky Brewerton has qualified for the Solheim Cup team
Becky Brewerton could not hide her delight after creating history and qualifying for Europe's Solheim Cup team to face America next month.

Brewerton becomes the first Welsh golfer to make the European team.

The 24-year-old from north Wales had to endure a nervous wait, but with results going her way, her place was secured.

"It hasn't sunk in, it is the most amazing feeling after a really nervy weekend. I'm relieved and thankful to have done enough," said Brewerton.

It is unbelievable to be representing Wales and I know I'll have the whole nation behind me

After missing the cut at the Wales Ladies Championship of Europe on Friday, Brewerton could do nothing but wait and see if she would qualify for the Solheim Cup team.

Needing a top five rankings finish she had to wait and hope that none of the three woman still competing who could overtake her would produce the goods at Machynys.

As things stood going into the final day, Brewerton was ranked in fifth position, but England's Rebecca Hudson and Swedish pair Annika Sorenstam and Linda Wessberg were still in the hunt.

At several stages during the day, Brewerton slipped out of the top five rankings, however results at Machynys started to go her way and with none of the trio able to improve sufficiently, her place was confirmed in the top five.

"I couldn't look at the scores and it was such a relief to have got in," admitted Brewerton.

"It was so close and I was so emotional and I could hardly think straight.

"It has been hanging over me for weeks and it was constantly mentioned and I'm glad it is all over and that I've qualified."

The team is officially announced on Tuesday and Brewerton and her European team-mates will now travel to Sweden for the ladies version of the Ryder Cup on 13-16 September, where they will take on their American counterparts.

And Brewerton will travel there as the first Welsh golfer to represent Europe in Ladies golf.

She said: "It is unbelievable to be representing Wales and I know I'll have the whole nation behind me and I'll do my best.

"It will be a fantastic test of golf, it is the biggest stage, competed between the best players and will be a huge test of my game and I can't wait."

At Machynys, Australia's Joanne Mills fought through strong winds and drizzling rain to capture her second Ladies European Tour title finish on a total of six-under-par, one stroke ahead of Germany's Bettina Hauert and England's Georgina Simpson.
