New caddie helps Monty at Oakmont

Colin Montgomerie has hired local caddie Billy Goddard for the US open at Oakmont, which starts this week.

Montgomerie split with Alastair McLean last weekend after missing the cut at the Austrian Open.

Goddard, 62, has been caddying at Oakmont for 48 years and was recommended by the Pennsylvania club.

"I told him if he needed another opinion, I'd be happy to help but I'm just going to do my job and keep my mouth shut," Goddard told Five Live.

"I was supposed to work with the media this week mainly because I didn't really want to caddie. I knew that there were qualifiers and amateurs I could probably get but I just thought I would pass on them.

"The caddie master called me up on Friday and he said: "I might have a bag you would like." He explained everything and I said I'd be glad to do that job."

Goddard worked with Miller Barber in the US Open, who was paired with Johnny Miller and who shot a stunning 63 to storm to victory.

And Goddard says he has had no problems so far with Montgomerie, who has a reputation for losing his temper when not playing well.

There is a par three which is 301 yards to the pin and I have never been given that by any caddie

"I've heard stories about him but all you have to do is shut your mouth and walk away," added Goddard.

"I have gone with him to practice but my opinion is that he is a nice guy. There have been no problems at all. He has a history but all these guys are like that, a lot of them try and hold it in, others let it out.

"If it is my fault then I will admit it is my fault and if I get hell - I will deserve it."

Montgomerie has not won a tournament since last December and has slumped to 39th in the world.

But the Scot was part of the three-way play-off won by Ernie Els when the Open was last held at Oakmont in 1994 and is confident that Goddard will be a big asset for this year's tournament.

"He knows that greens better than anyone else," said Montgomerie. "He has been here six days a week for the last 30 years.

"Putting was the area most concerning me. I have always been able to hit the ball but I am not getting it in the hole.

"It is not just the birdie putts I am missing, it is the par putts as well.

"Billy is a very fit looking guy. I have given him some ideas of what I want generally, it is very little in the way of advice it is a matter of reading the greens."

And Montgomerie says the Oakmont course will provide a massive test this week.

"This is as difficult a course as any, if you can get the putts in here you will be fine," he added. "People are already talking about six over to win it. I spoke to Lee Westwood and he said he would take six over right now.

"It is much longer than in 1994. Technology in that time has given us extra distance but not that much.

"There us a par three which is 301 yards to the pin and I have never been given that by any caddie. It was unbelievable. It is getting very long and very tough."
