Darren Clarke has been struggling to find his form |
Ryder Cup stars Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley have failed to make it through US Open qualifying at Walton Heath. Clarke finished three-over after rounds of 75 and 72 on Monday while fellow Irishman McGinley had two 71s.
Britain's Nick Dougherty, South African Darren Fichardt and Swede Peter Hanson were the top qualifiers on eight-under.
Marcus Fraser, Graeme McDowell, Miguel Rodriguez, Sam Walker, Soren Kjeldsen and Christian Cevaer also qualified for next week's major at Oakmont.
"The current state of my game is not good for the US Open, so it's maybe not such a bad thing," said Clarke, who has not made a halfway cut since February.
He also had to pull out of three events because of a hamstring strain suffered playing football with his sons Tyrone and Conor.
It was the first time Clarke had to play a qualifying event for a major since the 1995 Open, when he made it through at Ladybank and went on to finish 30th at St Andrews.
"I just struggled again - 35 putts both rounds," he added. "The co-ordination is not there. It's not clicking at all."
McGinley, having seen his world ranking slip to 138th, was also in a gloomy mood after his two rounds.
"I'm not scaling the heights. I never got hot at any stage," said the Dubliner.
A total of 52 players teed off for nine spots at Oakmont next week with Jean Van de Velde and Miguel Angel Jimenez, Ryder Cup team-mates in 1999, also unsuccessful.
Jimenez carded two 74s while Van de Velde shot 72 and 74.
