England's Justin Rose has failed in his bid to qualify for The Open via the American qualifying tournament at Canoe Brook in Summit, New Jersey.

Rose, yet to play in Europe this season, finished five shots adrift of leaders Tom Pernice and Geoff Ogilvy.

German veteran Bernhard Langer also missed out on the 14 available berths, but compatriot Alex Cejka qualified.

Wilhelm Schauman and Richard Barcelo took the final places with birdies on the hole one of a seven-man play-off.

Former US Open champion Corey Pavin was one of the unlucky five to lose out in the play-off.

He took 138 shots over his two rounds, four more than the leaders.

Steve Elkington, Bob Tway, Tom Kite and Jose Coceres all failed to qualify with totals of 139 - the same as Rose.
