David Frost won the African leg of qualifying for the 2005 Open despite firing a four-over 76 on Friday.

Frost, who carded a course-record 65 in Thursday's first round, ended up on three under par to claim one of three places on offer for St Andrews.

Andre Bossert of Switzerland and Scotland's Doug McGuigan also qualified after a three-way play-off with Tjaart van der Walt.

Mark Mouland of Wales finished five shots off the play-off trio.

Frost was delighted with his performance especially as the golfers had to cope with gale-force winds at the tight Atlantic Beach Golf Course in Cape Town.

His last Open appearance was in 2000 when it was last held at St Andrews.
This is a huge confidence-booster - I couldn't ask for a better way to start the year
Doug McGuigan
"At least at St Andrews the fairways are much wider," said the 45-year-old South African.

"It's great to be able to plan my year knowing that I'm going to the Open.

"It's a fantastic feeling winning here because you never become too good for the game of golf."

McGuigan, who represents Scotland but was born in Durban and raised in Kimberley, played his back nine in one under par and thought he had avoided a play-off when he two-putted the last for a 73 and a total of two under.

"I thought I was in, but found out I had to go back out there," said McGuigan.

"That play-off was really tough but it feels stunning now. We were talking about it and saying this is probably the biggest pre-qualifying out there. That was definitely the biggest pre-qualifying of my life. It's brilliant."

"After winning the Platinum Classic (in 2003) it's been a bit of a disaster. I had surgery on my shoulders and I haven't played well, so this is a huge confidence-booster. I couldn't ask for a better way to start the year."
