NI pair impress at Royal Birkdale
Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy fired a 72 on his British Amateur Championship debut
Darren Crowe and Rory McIlroy made impressive starts in the British Amateur Championship on Monday.

Dunmurry player Crowe shot a one-under-par 69 at Royal Birkdale while Holywood teenager McIlroy carded a 72 on his debut.

Richard Kilpatrick from Banbridge fired a three-over-par 75 on the Southport & Ainsdale course.

The top 64 from two rounds of strokeplay qualify for the matchplay stages at Royal Birkdale.

Crowe was the best of the Irish on the British Open links with Sean McTernan and Michael McGeady both returning 72s.

Mark Campbell had a 74, Mark Shanahan went round in 77 while Mark O'Sullivan shot a disappointing 79.

North West's Brian Elhinney topped the Irish contingent at Southport & Ainsdale with a superb 69.

Mervyn Owens is in good shape after a 70, Peter O'Keefe had a 76 while Greg Bowden (78) and Cian McNamara (81) will struggle to qualify.
