Holywood's Rory McIlroy has helped get Ryder Cup week off to a great start by playing in Europe's win over their US counterparts in the junior event. McIlroy, the first Irishman to play in the Junior Ryder Cup, was part of the Europe side which claimed a 8.5 to 3.5 win at the Westfield Center in Ohio.
"It was a very good experience. All the team played very well," said the 15-year-old Irish Youths Champion.
McIlroy claimed half-a-point from his two fourball matches.
In Saturday's opening fourballs, McIlroy and Marius Thorp halved with Luke Guthrie and Chris DeForest.
McIlroy and partner Linn Gustafsson lost their fourball on Sunday against Chris DeForest and Mina Harigae by a slender one-hole margin but victory was already assured.
The young Europeans will meet Bernhard Langer's squad later this week and they will then get the chance to spectate at the big event which starts at Oakland Hills on Friday.
McIlroy, who has been playing golf since the age of two, is aiming to emulate the likes of Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley by playing in the Ryder Cup himself one day.
When asked about his golfing ambitions, he says matter-of-factly:"To win majors and hopefully play in the big Ryder Cup."
