Stupples given Solheim wildcard
Karen Stupples
Stupples finished joint-11th at this year's British Open
Britain's Karen Stupples was handed the final captain's wildcard on Sunday for Europe's defence of the Solheim Cup.

Stupples joins automatic picks Ludivine Kreutz and Gwaldys Nocera as the rookies in the side to face America in Indiana from 9 to 11 September.

Britons Laura Davies and Trish Johnson and Swede Annika Sorenstam were among the five others who were automatic picks because of their rankings.

Scot Catriona Matthew was named as one of the four other wildcards.

Stupples - the 2004 British Open winner - gained the nod over Scotland's Janice Moodie and Sweden's Liselotte Neumann for the final place, despite missing the last three weeks with an ear infection.

"I knew it was going to be close for the pick, but I had hoped that the fact that I'd won a major and another LPGA tournament would work in my favour," said Stupples.

"I loved playing in my two Curtis Cups, and I'm sure the Solheim will be just as special."

Captain Catrin Nilsmark admitted the final pick was a difficult decision.

"Janice and Liselotte both have good records, but sometimes new players deserve a chance and you have to be a little daring," she said.

American skipper Nancy Lopez has named Wendy Ward and Beth Daniel as her two wildcard picks.

The other 10 players of her team automatically qualified.

Paula Creamer, at the age of 19, will become the youngest Solheim Cup player while 49-year-old Daniel will become the oldest.

America have won five Solheim Cups to Europe's three. But Europe has never won the Cup on American soil.

Europe's Solheim Cup team:

Top seven from rankings: Annika Sorenstam (Sweden), Laura Davies (England), Ludivine Kreutz (France), Maria Hjorth (Sweden), Iben Tinning (Denmark), Trish Johnson (England) and Gwladys Nocera (France)

Captain's selections: Sophie Gustafson, Carin Koch (both Sweden), Catriona Matthew (Scotland), Suzann Petersen (Norway), Karen Stupples (England)

America's Solheim Cup team:

Top 10 from rankings: Cristie Kerr, Meg Mallon, Juli Inkster, Rosie Jones, Pat Hurst, Natalie Gulbis, Christina Kim, Paula Creamer, Michele Redman and Laura Diaz

Captain's selections: Wendy Ward, Beth Daniel
