Britain's Laura Davies cruised through the extra day of play at the Australian Open to win the title by six shots.

Play was suspended overnight because of rain but it did not deter Davies who birdied the 14th on her way to a winning five-under-par round of 70.

"This was a quality field and it's a title I've wanted to win for a long time," said the 40-year-old.

Australian Rachel Teske took the runners-up spot while Britain's Trish Johnson was third on three over.

"I hit a lot of good shots and it is a very promising effort at this early stage of the season," Johnson said.

Fellow Briton Johanna Head carded a final round of 69 to take a share of sixth spot.

Davies' victory in Sydney ended a 13-month title drought for the Coventry-born player.

"It's great to prove that I can still compete against the very best," added Davies.

"Hopefully, this is the start of a great year."

Davies will now head to the US-based LPGA Tour which starts in Tucson, Arizona this week.
