Phoenix Open

Harrison Frazar shot a nine-under-par 62 to lead by two shots after the first round of the Phoenix Open in Arizona.

David Toms was on course to take a share of the lead but he carded a double-bogey six on the final hole and had to settle for a 64.

He shares second place with John Huston, while young English golfer Luke Donald is a shot further back.

Donald, who turned professional in 2001 and earned his first PGA Tour victory the following year in the Southern Farm Bureau Classic, is among five players tied for fourth.

A member of the tour since 1998, Frazar has secured two second-place finishes in his career so far. His best effort last year was a tie for fourth at the Memorial.

Huston, a six-time winner on the tour, had birdies on five of his last seven holes to move within two shots of the lead.

South African Retief Goosen, the 2001 US Open champion, JJ Henry, John Rollins and James McLean joined Donald on 65.

Singapore Masters

South Africa's Ernie Els finished two shots adrift of the leader as a thunderstorm halted play early in the first round of the Singapore Masters.

Els, chasing his fourth straight win, was five under through 15 holes when play was suspended at 1545 local time (0745 GMT) on the Laguna National Golf and Country Club.

The world number two trailed European Tour rookie Benn Barham, who fired a 65 for the clubhouse lead on seven under.

The 25-year-old Englishman was one shot ahead of former Ryder Cup star Paul Broadhurst, his English compatriot Simon Khan and India's Jeev Milka Singh.

Darren Clarke fired a first-round 63 to race into a share of the lead at South Africa's Sun City.

Clarke used his new driver to devastating effect as he carded an eagle, eight birdies and a bogey to leave him level on nine under with Austria's Uli Weinhandl, who won the pre-qualifying event earlier this week.

England's Mark Foster, who won a six-way play-off last week at the Dunhill Championship in Johannesburg, is three shots behind Clarke on six under.

English number one Justin Rose picked up two shots on the front nine and another at the 12th to join Zimbabwe's Nick Price on three under.
