Sweden's Annika Sorenstam won the Mizuno Classic in Japan to become the first player since 1968 to win 10 times in one year. Sorenstam shot a final round five-under-par 67 to finish the tournament on 15 under, two shots clear of South Korea's Grace Park. Park's fellow Korean Se Ri Pak was third, three shots adrift, and Gloria Park was fourth, five shots behind the winner. Sorenstam admitted she was in a state of shock. "I set such high goals for myself and reaching 10 wins was one of them," she said. "Now I'm so happy that I could cry." Catriona Matthew, in joint 11th after a 70, was the leading British player, and remains the highest Briton at number 15 on the US money list with $553,394. The Scot had three birdies and it completed a successful three week-run in Asia. She had a top 20 in the Nine Bridges Classic in Korea and reached the last 16 of last week's Cisco World Matchplay Championship in Japan. "I'm certainly delighted with the way I've played over the last few events," said Matthew, who has had nine eight top-10s in a super-consistent season. "If I could just get a few more putts to fall then maybe I could snatch a win." But it was a disappointing event for Laura Davies, twice a runner-up in the past three years. She closed with a 75 for six over 22 and was joint 60th in the 78-strong field. |
