| Friday, 8 November, 2002, 09:55 GMT Day two: Goosen v Harrington Second round of the Volvo Masters After round two: Harrington +8, Goosen +5 Padraig Harrington's hopes of pipping Retief Goosen to the European Order of Merit have floundered at the season-ending Volvo Masters in Valderrama. Both players struggled in their opening rounds and things got little better on Friday. Harrington managed only one birdie and will need to improve his form drastically if he is to overhaul Goosen. The pair will resume on Saturday despite their low aggregate scores because there is no cut at the tournament. Hole-by hole updates 18th: Harrington: The Irishman's par putt is off target and he finishes his round at eight over for the tournament. Despite the poor score, he will be back to fight another day as there is no cut at the Volvo Masters. 17th: Harrington: He holes a short putt to record his first birdie of the day, but it might prove to be too little too late. 16th: Harrington: Par for the Irishman, who now needs a miracle to topple Goosen 15th: Harrington: Par again for Harrington, whose dreams of winning the European Order of Merit have all but gone. 14th: Harrington: Another par for the Irishman, but unless Goosen slips up again, steady scoring will not be enough. 13th: Harrington: Holes are running out for Harrington, who will need to make the cut if he is to have a chance to win the Order of Merit. His latest par means he stays at eight over for the tournament. 12th: Harrington: Another par from Harrington but he needs to get on a birdie-roll if he is to stay in the tournament. 11th: Harrington: After two dropped shots in a row, Harrington manages a par at the long 11th. 10th: Harrington: Harrington's challenge for the Order of Merit looks to be all but over as he has yet another bogey at the 10th. 9th: Harrington: The Irishman's outward nine has turned into a wayward nine as he drops his fourth shot of the day, failing to get up and down from a bunker. 8th: 7th: 6th: 5th 4th His drive ends up behind a tree, forcing him to play a shot left-handed. Then his third shot does not find the green.
3rd 2nd 1st For the second round running, he hooks his drive into the trees. Forced to hit a low fade for his approach, he overdoes it and the ball skips through a bunker into the rough. The Irishman then puts his chip 25 feet past the hole but does well to get down in two, nailing a six-foot putt to drop just only one shot. Goosen: The South African makes a solid start with a par. |
