Latest news from the Cisco World Match Play Championship at Wentworth
World Match Play final
  • Els bt Garcia 2&1

South Africa's Ernie Els won a fourth World Match Play Championship with victory over Sergio Garcia at Wentworth.

Never behind all week, the Open champion beat Garcia by 2&1 in the 36-hole final.

It was Els' fifth victory of the season.

    Major incidents as they happened:

    Hole thirty-five
Garcia makes a mess of the 17th hole, tee-ing off into the rough and then finding the trees with his second shot. Although the Spaniard finally finds the green with his fourth shot, he concedes the hole and the match to Els. Els wins 2&1

    Hole thirty-four
Garcia hits his tee-shot into the woods leading to a five minute delay while officials search for his ball. The Spaniard eventually concedes the hole after locating the ball in a ditch and scuffing two attempted recovery shots. Els is now two up with two to play. Els 2 up

    Hole thirty-three
Garcia putts from one yard on the par-four 15th to halve the hole. Els maintains his one hole advantage with just three holes to play. Els 1 up

    Hole thirty-two
Garcia comes close with a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-three 14th, but a bad miss by Els from seven-foot means another bogey for the South African and reduces his lead to just one. Els 1 up

    Hole thirty-one
Els plays a scrappy hole, finding the bunker with his first, and then ending up in the sand again with a wayward third shot. A delicate chip on to the green takes the South African to within seven feet of the hole, but he misses the putt to register the first double bogey of the day. Els 2 up

    Spain's Sergio Garcia
Garcia is in his first Wentworth final

    Hole thirty
Garcia makes a five-foot birdie putt to earn a half point. The Spaniard trails Els by three with just six holes to play. Els 3 up

    Hole twenty-nine
Garcia finds the sand with his tee-shot, then an untidy second lands in another bunker in front of the green. But the Spaniard's chip from the bunker lands inches away from the flag. Els makes the green in two, but is forced to settle for a par-four and the half point when his 15-foot putt runs along the edge of hole. Els 3 up

    Hole twenty-eight
Els makes the green with his tee-shot and then hits a stunning 30-foot birdie putt to go three up with eight holes to play. Els 3 up

    Hole twenty-seven
Garcia concedes after landing his tee-shot in the trees and watching Els make the green in two, hitting his second to within 10 feet of the flag. Els 2 up

    Hole twenty-six
Els' eighth par in a row is not enough as Garcia reduces the deficit with a 10-foot putt for a birdie three. Els 1 up

    Hole twenty-five
Els wins the hole after Garcia lands his tee-shot in a ditch and is forced to drop a shot. Although Garcia plays his remaining shots magnificently, Els' chipped third shot to within six inches of the hole is enough for par and the win. Els 2 up

    Hole twenty-four
Garcia plays a magnificent sixth hole, landing his second shot to within inches of the flag on his way to reducing the deficit. Els is failing to reproduce the superb golf he played in the opening 14 holes and is forced to settle for his sixth par in a row. Els 1 up

    Hole twenty-three
The players hit identical tee-shots to the edge of the green and, although Garcia is more successful with his attempted putt, both players make par and halve the hole. Els 2 up

    Hole twenty-two
With rain falling, both players have difficulty with the fourth hole. Neither makes the green with their first two shots and on the sticky surface both then under-hit their third shots. The pair settle for par-fives and halve the hole. Els 2 up

    Hole twenty-one
Garcia hits an excellent second shot on to the green but misses a 20-foot putt for a birdie and has to settle for the half point. Els 2 up

    Hole twenty:
Garcia finds the green with his tee-shot off the 154 yard second - the shortest hole on the Wentworth course - but misses a 12-foot birdie putt. Els recovers from an over-hit first shot to make par and halve the hole. Els 2 up

    Hole nineteen:
Sergio Garcia gets the afternoon session under way with the tournament's first birdie of the week at the par-four first, reducing Els' lead to two. Els 2 up

    Hole eighteen:
Garcia and Els finish the morning session each with a birdie four at the 18th to halve the hole. Els 3 up

    Hole seventeen:
Garcia finds the edge of the green with his second shot, but over-hits his third and then misses a 15-foot birdie putt. Els recovers from a bad start to make par and halve the hole. Els 3 up

    Hole sixteen:
Garcia wins his second successive hole when Els misses a four-foot putt to register a bogey five. Els 3 up

    Hole fifteen:
Both players run into difficulties on the par-four 15th, with Garcia finding two bunkers with his first two shots. Els narrowly misses the bunker with a wayward drive, but he cannot escape the sand with his second. Garcia makes the better recovery, chipping to with inches of the hole. Els misses his eight-foot putt for par to drop his first shot of the day. Els 4 up

    Hole fourteen:
Both Garcia and Els make opposite edges of the green from the tee on the short 14th. Els narrowly misses a long uphill putt with his second shot, but makes par from four feet with his third. Garcia putts from three feet to halve the hole. Els 5 up

    Hole thirteen:
Els finds the bunker with his second shot but another magnificent recovery earns the South African a par four and a share of the points with Garcia. Els 5 up

    South Africa's Ernie Els
Els is chasing a fourth Wentworth title

    Hole twelve:
Els, who has made only one birdie on this hole all week, makes a bad start when his tee-shot goes wide and into the crowd. But the South African recovers with a superb drive on to the green, then makes an eagle putt from 10 feet after Garcia misses from a similar distance. Els is now eight under from the 12 holes completed. Els 5 up

    Hole eleven:
Garcia pulls his tee-shot and lands in the rough, then misses the green with an over-hit second shot. Els makes the green in two, then sinks a seven-foot birdie putt to extend his lead. Els 4 up

    Hole ten:
Garcia over-hits second shot on to the green, but sinks a superb 30-foot putt to make par. Els makes the green with his first shot, but misses a seven-foot putt to go four up, settling for par and the half point. Els 3 up

    Hole nine:
Els completes the front nine in 30 with a birdie from seven feet at the par-four ninth to extend his lead over Garcia to three. Garcia goes out in two-under 33. Els 3 up

    Hole eight:
Garcia is struggling to impose himself on this game, making his seventh par in eight holes. But he earns a half when Els matches his par four. Els 2 up

    Hole seven:
Garcia's par four is not enough as Els fires his fourth birdie of the day to regain his two hole advantage. The South African has not been behind throughout this tournament. Els 2 up

    Hole six:
Els, in his fifth Wentworth final, matches Garcia's par four at the 354 yard sixth to maintain his one hole advantage. Els 1 up
