Vijay Singh (Fiji) beat Justin Rose (Eng) 1 up Vijay Singh held off a determined challenge from Justin Rose to win on the final hole. Singh held a three-shot lead after the morning session but Rose did not wilt and refused to let his opponent stretch away. A birdie from Singh put him two ahead with two to play which was matched at the next when Rose nicked the 17th. Rose had a glorious chance to send the match into a sudden death play-off but missed a putt from four feet to send Singh into the next round. "It was one of those days," said Rose. "It was frustrating because I was behind all day. I focused pretty well all day but to take three to get down from the fringe on 18 was disappointing." Singh, who has been complaining of neck and shoulder problems, was glad when it finished on the 36th hole. "I knew it was going to be a tough match," he said. |
