| Saturday, 21 September, 2002, 00:12 GMT 01:12 UK US fight back to level ![]() America had plenty to celebrate at the close of play America have produced a stunning fightback to level the scores on day one of the Solheim Cup in Minnesota. Britain's Laura Davies and Spanish rookie Paula Marti led Europe to a commanding 3-1 lead in the morning foursomes before the hosts fought back to 4-4 after the afternoon fourballs. Davies and Marti had looked on course for a second win of the day, facing Rosie Jones and Cristie Kerr in the fourballs, but they lost by one hole in an extraordinary finish.
Europe's only win of the afternoon came courtesy of Britain's Mhairi McKay and Swede Carin Koch, with a three and two win over Juli Inkster and Kelli Kuehne. Afterwards McKay said: "I was very nervous at the start but it's great to make a winning start. "Carin is a great player as her Solheim record proves." In the morning foursomes, Davies and Marti went round in a superb 67, finishing with an eagle on the 18th that forced Inkster and Laura Diaz to concede. World number one Annika Sorenstam and fellow Swede Koch followed up with a three and two win over Meg Mallon and Kelli Kuehne. And Europe's third point of the morning came when Helen Alfredsson and Suzann Pettersen secured a four and two triumph over Kelly Robbins and Pat Hurst. The US avoided a whitewash when Beth Daniel, the oldest player on display at the age of 45, and rookie Wendy Ward defeated Iben Tinning and Raquel Carriedo by one hole.
There was a complete turnaround in the afternoon as the Americans hit back. Diaz and Emilee Klein started the comeback with a commanding four and three victory over Sophie Gustafson and Karine Icher. Diaz had six birdies, winning four holes by herself and halving two others. The rookie-veteran combination of Kerr and Jones earned a nailbiting win over Davies and Marti. The Americans had been four up after nine holes but had to fend off a spirited late challenge from their European rivals for the narrowest of wins. Sorrenstam was unable to repeat her morning heroics as she and Maria Hjorth lost two and one to Meg Mallon and Michele Redman. The tournament continues Saturday with the identical format - four foursomes, followed by four fourballs. |
