| Sunday, 9 June, 2002, 02:57 GMT 03:57 UK Smith ahead after late surge The experienced Roberts misfired in the third round Chris Smith gatecrashed David Gossett and Loren Roberts' Tennessee reunion to take a third-round lead in the Buick Classic. Smith shot a four-under-par 67 to move a stroke ahead of the neighbours from Germantown at 11 under on the Westchester Country Club course. The long-hitting Smith took the lead with a two-putt birdie on the par-five 18th, his fifth birdie of the round. He played 30 holes Saturday, finishing off a second-round 69 in the morning.
The 23-year-old Gossett, with sister Joni caddying, shot a 70, and Roberts a 71. Pat Perez and Canadian Ian Leggatt were two strokes behind, and Jerry Kelly follows that pair at eight-under. Roberts, a seven-time winner on the PGA Tour, had the lead at 10 under on Saturday morning after the completion of the suspended second round, but dropped back with bogeys on holes nine and ten before rallying with birdies at 13 and 16. Gossett, the 1999 US Amateur champion who won the John Deere Classic last year to join the PGA Tour, bogeyed the par-three 16th after reaching 11-under on the par-three 14th.
