| Saturday, 8 June, 2002, 01:20 GMT 02:20 UK Daniel still in front Davies in trouble at the 18th in Wilmington England's Laura Davies missed the cut as Beth Daniel held on to her lead in the second round of the McDonald's LPGA Championship in Wilmington, Delaware. Daniel posted a one-under-par 71 on Friday to lead at five-under-par 137. Karrie Webb played early in the day and shot an even second round to trail Daniel by two strokes at three-under-par 139. Davies, a two-time winner of this major and a top 10 finisher all but once in the last eight years, posted rounds of 76 and 80.
But Scotland's Catriona Matthew was maintaining a threat on the leaderboard. She opened with a 70 and was still one under through the opening stretch, just two behind Webb. Webb, seeking a sixth major in less than three years, was forced to complete three holes of her first round on Friday before heading out 50 minutes later for round two. And she followed her first-round 68 with a 71 to set a three-under-par target of 139 for the rest to chase. Webb said: "The course was playing much longer after all the rain. "But I am really pleased with the way I played. "The majors always give me more of a buzz and I enjoy the challenge of a tough course. I love to grind." Second round scores of the LPGA Championship at the Dupont Country club 139 Karrie Webb (Aus) 68 71 Selected Others: 152 Stefania Croce (Ita) 76 76 |
