1822 RUGBY UNION: Former France captain and ex-Sale coach Philippe Saint-Andre will take over from Marc Lievremont as coach of France after the Rugby World Cup. The French Rugby Federation said the 44-year-old will officially take charge on 1 December after leaving his current position as Toulon's director of rugby.

1817 FOOTBALL: Lionel Messi wins the inaugural Uefa Best Player in Europe award for the 2010-11 season after beating his Barcelona teammate Xavi Hernandez and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid in a poll of journalists from across Europe.

1811 TENNIS: Heather Watson will face third seed and Wimbledon finalist Maria Sharapova in the first round of the US Open. British number one Elena Baltacha will go up against US wild card Jamie Hampton, who she beat in the opening round of last year's Australian Open with the winner to face a possible clash with former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round. The third Briton in the women's draw Anne Keothavong will face South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers in the opening round.

1805 CRICKET: England beat Ireland by 11 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method in their rain-affected one-day international in Dublin. England made 201-8 and Ireland were set a revised target of 129 from 23 overs but could only manage 117-8.

1746 TENNIS: Andy Murray will be playing Somdev Devvarman for the first time when they meet in the opening round at the US Open. The 26-year-old won gold in the men's singles at last year's Commonwealth Games and earlier this year reached the third round at Indian Wells after coming through qualifying.

1524 BOXING: Frank Warren has vowed to set up a rematch between George Groves and James DeGale. Groves beat DeGale to win the British super-middleweight title in May and promoter Warren said: "It is an obvious fight that will definitely happen again. 1427 JUDO: Scotland's Euan Burton was in philosophical mood after being knocked out of the World Championships in the second round. He told BBC Sport: "I don't think winning the World Championships would have made me any more likely to be Olympic champion next year, and going out in the first rounds won't make me any less likely to be Olympic champion. It's not really a major setback."

1420 FOOTBALL: Uncapped Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny has been named in France's squad for next month's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Albania and Romania. Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery is also in the squad after missing the 1-1 draw with Chile through injury.

1400 FOOTBALL: Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler has told BBC Radio Kent he has been offered plenty of strikers by agents as he looks for a goalscorer to stand-in for the injured Adam Birchall. Hessenthaler revealed he is now more likely to take a player on loan than make a permanent signing.

1358 ATHLETICS: South Africa have picked double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius in its team for the All Africa Games Thursday, giving him another chance to prove himself against able-bodied athletes ahead of next year's Olympics. Pistorius will make history in Daegu, South Korea as the first amputee athlete to compete at a world championships and will then travel straight to the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique, which run 3-18 September.

1348 JUDO: Britain's top-ranked judoka Euan Burton has crashed out of the second round of the World Championships at Bercy Stadium in Paris. Burton lost to Srdjan Mrvaljevic of Montenegro after picking up two defensive penalties which equated to a yuko against the Scot.

1346 FOOTBALL: Alberto Aquilani is ready to make an impact at AC Milan as his loan move from Liverpool nears completion. "I am delighted to have arrived here," said Aquilani. "This is a leap in my career."

1344 FOOTBALL: Joey Barton on his potential move to QPR: "The latest is that we are just completing the final stages of the medical, so we will just get that over and done with and then see where we are at. I have not made a final decision just yet, but speaking to the club, they have got big ambitions and I had to come down and hear what they have got to say and go through the formalities of the medical side of it just in case any deal does happen."

1310 ATHLETICS: World record holder Usain Bolt says it is "sad" that fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell has had to withdraw from the 100m at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in South Korea. Powell, the fastest man in the world this year, is suffering from a groin injury but could still compete in the 4x100m relay in Daegu. His withdrawal follows that of American sprinter Tyson Gay, who also pulled out of the championships due to injury.

"It is fantastic news for the families," said the Scot. "This isn't a political issue - it is a humanitarian one, so at least common sense has prevailed." Dalglish was was in his first spell as Reds boss when the disaster happened.
