| Cole's sweet revenge Cole hit back at Hoddle's previous criticisms Blackburn Rovers striker Andy Cole revealed that gaining revenge against former England manager Glenn Hoddle made his match-winning goal in the Worthington Cup final that much sweeter. Cole latched on to a Ledley King error in the 68th minute to seal a 2-1 win for the underdogs. Hoddle, as England manager, had accused Cole of needing four or five opportunities to score. And afterwards, when asked if silencing Hoddle with the strike had been an added boost, he said: "That made it feel really good." Still angry at Hoddle's comments back in 1998, he continued: "I'm not prepared to hold grudges as I'm too old for that. It's water under the bridge.
"But the way he went about it, in telling the press before he told me, well that just shows his style." Matt Jansen had put Blackburn ahead in the 25th minute of the final, after steering the ball under the legs of Spurs goalkeeper Neil Sullivan. Christian Ziege levelled the scores eight minutes later before Cole's late strike sealed Rovers' first cup triumph for 74 years. Asked about his goal, Cole added: "Scoring any goal is a great feeling but this was something special to score in a cup final and it's something I'll treasure." Penalty controversy The Worthington Cup was one of the few trophies to have eluded Cole who won the FA Cup, the Premier League and the European Cup while at Manchester United. "It's special for me," conceded Cole, who joined Blackburn from United for 7.5m. "I've won just about everything else before but this tops it off nicely." Hoddle, meanwhile, defended himself in his long-running feud with the England international. "He is a good player and I have always said that," said the Spurs manager. "I said I thought he would do well for Blackburn and I'm sure he will do."
Hoddle, though, preferred to criticise match referee Graham Poll, who turned down Teddy Sheringham's appeal for a penalty in the 88th minute. Sheringham felt he had been fouled by Nils-Eric Johansson but Poll waved play on. And Hoddle said: "The massive key for us was a nailed-down penalty that we didn't get. I've seen it and most people are telling me the same - it's a penalty." Those sentiments were echoed by a furious Sheringham, who described it as a "definite penalty". And he added: "I can't believe he's not given it. "I was on to him all game, so he decided not to give it. That shows the sort of fella you are dealing with." |
