Round Two

Blackburn 2-0 Oldham

Blackburn began their campaign with a comfortable victory over Second Division Oldham.

Goals in each half from Matt Jansen and Darren Dunning eased Blackburn into the third round.

Spurs 2-0 Torquay

Spurs had to wait until just past the hour before they broke Third Divsion Torquay's stubborn resistance.

Ledley King claimed Spurs' first goal and, eight minutes later, Les Ferdinand made the game safe for Glenn Hoddle's side.

Round Three

Blackburn 2-1 Middlesbrough (aet)

It took Blackburn 120 minutes to squeeze past their Premiership opponents Middlesbrough.

A Craig Hignett goal was cancelled out by Szilard Nemeth's equaliser, before Craig Short - who misses the final through suspension - grabbed the winner in the 113th minute.

Tranmere 0-4 Spurs

The previous season, when Glenn Hoddle had been Southampton manager, he had watched in horror as his side lost 4-3 after being 3-0 ahead.

But as Spurs manager Hoddle enjoyed a more comfortable return to the Wirral.

Spurs ran out comfortable winners with Teddy Sheringham, Darren Anderton, Gustavo Poyet and Sergei Rebrov getting the goals.

Tranmere's cause was not helped by Micky Mellon's dismissal in the 33rd minute.

Round Four

Blackburn 2-0 Manchester City

Goals at the end of each half from Nils-Eric Johansson and Damien Johnson - now on the transfer list - sent Manchester City tumbling out of the competition.

City struggled once Christian Negouai had been dismissed in the 26th minute.

Fulham 1-2 Spurs

Spurs just got the better of Fulham in this London derby.

Rebrov's goal was cancelled out by Barry Hayles' strike, before Simon Davies got the winner in the 86th minute.

Quarter-finals
Blackburn 4-0 Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger fielded a reserve side for this quarter-final and within 21 minutes his side were 3-0 down.

Matt Jansen scored the first two, Mark Hughes grabbed the third and Jansen completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute.

Spurs 6-0 Bolton

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce also paid the price for sending out a weakened side.

Davies gave Spurs the lead and then Ferdinand claimed a hat-trick in nine minutes to give Spurs a 4-0 first-half lead.

An own goal from Anthony Barness and a Steffern Iversen strike completed Spurs' half-dozen goals.

Semi-finals
Sheffield Wednesday 1-2 Blackburn
Blackburn 4-2 Sheffield Wednesday (Agg: 6-3)

Blackburn had practically booked their final place within the first 39 minutes of this two-legged semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday.

Craig Hignett and Andy Cole scored the Blackburn goals at Hillsborough, although Efan Ekoku did give Wednesday some hope with a strike just after half-time.

In the return at Ewood Park, Damien Duff and Jansen gave Blackburn an unassailable lead with first-half goals.

Ekoku pulled a goal back for Wednesday, before Cole restored Blackburn's two-goal lead.

Trond-Egil Soldtvedt got another consolation goal for Wednesday, before Hignett completed Blackburn's 6-3 aggregate win.

Chelsea 2-1 Spurs
Spurs 5-1 Chelsea (agg: 6-2)

In the first-leg - for the 26th time in league and cup meetings - Spurs were once again unable to beat Chelsea thanks to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's brace.

A Ferdinand goal looked to have done enough to earn Spurs at least a draw, before the Dutchman's 77th minute free-kick gave Chelsea a narrow win.
