We saw the World Cup come to life when much-fancied Spain, the European champions, slipped to a shock 1-0 defeat by Switzerland but then saw hosts South Africa get outclassed by Uruguay to leave their hopes of qualifying for the last 16 hanging by a thread. Here's my 2010 World Cup finals team of the day from Wednesday 16 June:
Goalkeeper Switzerland
Benaglio made crucial saves for the Swiss in the upset of the tournament so far as Spain were left frustrated despite having two-dozen shots at goal. Left back Uruguay
The Porto man was tough and ruthless. He didn't show an ounce of sentiment towards the host nation. Centre back Switzerland
The Auxerre central defender held the line and organised his defence brilliantly as Spain tried to put Ottmar Hitzfeld's side under pressure. Centre back Uruguay
The Villarreal defender just did enough against a lacklustre Bafana Bafana who now face a huge task to qualify for the knockout phase. Right back Switzerland
Lichtsteiner was exceptional throughout. Two fantastic tackles on Andres Iniesta and Fernando Torres in the final minutes preserved Switzerland's slender lead. Midfielder Chile
Most things went through him as he helped steered Chile to a deserved victory. Looks like a player who could make a big impression on this tournament. Midfielder Switzerland
A captain's performance if ever I saw one. The Udinese midfield man was also extremely cool under pressure despite being up against Spain's classy midfield. Midfielder Chile
Worked very hard and scored the crucial goal that mattered for Chile against a fairly limited Honduras side. Midfielder Uruguay
Broke South African hearts by scoring twice and making Uruguay's third. He's maturing into a top-class player now. Striker Chile
The Mexico-based striker played his part and got the vital goal. Striker Switzerland
Played up front on his own and it was his strength and power which gave Spanish defenders Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol nightmares as the Swiss pulled off a real surprise.
