Portsmouth ladies coach wary of Sunderland threat

Women's football

Portsmouth Ladies coach Vanessa Ryanbird says Sunderland will be out for revenge when the sides meet in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Pompey face the Black Cats for the second time in a fortnight after defeating them 2-1 win in the Women's Premier League Cup quarter-final.

"I'm sure they'll be all guns blazing and out to get revenge on us.

"It will be difficult but we've got nothing to lose and will give it our best shot," she told BBC Radio Solent.

Pompey are just one of two sides to beat the Black Cats this season, after the Women's Premier League leaders lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest in September.

"That was one of the best days of our history, we've never been through to a semi-final of a national competition before and we did it in style," said Raynbird.

"We beat them once and who's to say we can't do it again, it would be unbelievable and a big achievement for us."

Pompey sit just five points off the top of the Women's Premier League South Division, and having also booked a place against Shanklin in the Hampshire Cup semi-final, they remain on course to win four trophies this season.

"Our enthusiasm and work rate is 100% and we're really enjoying this season," said Raynbird.

"We have a really good set up in our squad and have really good players. So we now take them up to Sunderland this weekend and they'll do the job and they'll do it extremely well."
